Hanoi to Da Nang Destination Reviews

I have ridden many trains in Europe, Canada and Japan (including several sleeper trains in Europe) over many years. The VIP New Livitrans Express is not like those trains. We bought a VIP ticket which should have put us in a private compartment for 2 but we shared with 2 others and a third person a few stops later (note: the bedding was not changed between travellers). VIP simply meant a cover on our pillow and a bag of snacks worth about 150,000VND ($8 CAD). The compartment was hot due to anemic AC and the beds were hard and permanent - they were not seats that flipped over to become beds. Washroom was much more cramped than modern trains. Very disappointing and comparitavely expensive trip (tickets purchases from 12go) from Hanoi to Da Nang that arrived an hour late - which just prolonged the agony.

Very efficient way to book the train. No problem at the station with e-tickets. Boarding was problem free.

The train cabin was not the cabin in your 12GO promo picture. There was no wifi for 95% of this 17 hour trip. The A/C was ok at best. The food package looked like a sandwich but it was a bread roll, banana and a small bag of cheese crackers.

It was better than we expected. Train left and arrived on time. It would have been nice to have the snacks that was part of our package that we bought to be displayed on the table instead of being in a brown paper bag. Washrooms were clean. The door to the compartment to get food was broken while we were there.

Very cold in the bus. Me and my child got a cold and have temperature after trip. No way to buy food or eat something in the way. Very few toilet stops. Driver doesn’t know English at all. It was really stressful trip.

Should I tip taxi in Da Nang?

Tipping taxi drivers in Da Nang is not a common practice, but it is appreciated. Most fares include the cost of the ride, and drivers don’t expect additional tips. However, rounding up to the nearest 10,000 VND or leaving small change is seen as courteous, especially for good service. Some taxi companies, such as Mai Linh or Vinasun, have consistent pricing and reliable drivers. If you receive exceptional service, such as help with heavy luggage or efficient route navigation, a modest tip is a kind gesture. Keep in mind that cash is preferred since digital tipping options may not be available.
  • Standard tipping: Rounding up the fare.
  • Cash tips are most appreciated.
  • Helpful for exceptional service but not required.
Offering a tip is entirely at your discretion but shows gratitude in a way drivers understand.

Is it better to live in Hanoi or Da Nang?

The decision depends on lifestyle preferences, work, and climate. Hanoi, Vietnam’s capital, offers rich history, cultural landmarks, and a larger urban economy, making it ideal for career opportunities and experiencing northern traditions. However, its traffic congestion and cooler winters may deter some. Da Nang, a coastal city, provides a more relaxed lifestyle with clean beaches, modern infrastructure, and a warmer, tropical climate. It’s popular among expats seeking a balance between work and leisure, especially with its proximity to UNESCO sites like Hoi An and My Son.
  • Hanoi: Capital, cultural hub, cooler climate.
  • Da Nang: Coastal, relaxed, warmer weather.
  • Key factors: career, climate, lifestyle.
Both cities offer distinct advantages, so evaluate personal priorities when choosing.
