Da Nang to Hanoi Destination Reviews

ME
We traveled with this company from Da Nang to Hanoi. The bus ride was very uncomfortable: the driver honked the horn every 15 minutes, making it impossible for us to sleep properly. On top of that, he drove poorly, roughly and in a rushed manner throughout the entire trip causing us to arrive unnecessarily three hours early. The estimated arrival time was 10:30 AM, but we arrived in Hanoi at 7:00 AM! The bus rocked so much that we were constantly thrown from side to side in the cabin. What’s the point of having a blanket, pillow, and a spacious, comfortable cabin if you’re being shaken like a maraca for 10 straight hours?!

Well lets start with the misleading information and pictures when booking online. There needs to be a better distinction between 1st class and VIP. I genuinely believed that I had booked a two person cabin, but in actual fact had selected two seats in a four bed cabin. The beds were too hard and the top bunks difficult to access for people over 45 years old. The food offered on the train didn't cater to Western tastes. The staff serving the food didn't know English and couldn't be bothered with explaining what they were serving. There was one toilet per two carriages, which meant there were quite a few people all waiting for a turn. Being on the top bunk I saw nothing of the country side or any scenery for that matter.

Overall experience was great. My only observation is on the carry-on policy - my backpack weighted more than 7kgs and I asked to pay for the additional kgs or additional hand luggage and I just got a no, that it needed to go as a checked bag. However in the plane there were people with bigger bags, certainly above the 7kgs, which got me frustrated. The rules should apply the same to everyone.

Surprise was that they shared train with other operators... Pictures online or in the voucher were misleading - this could be improced on 12go side. But overall a beautiful experience.

Hard to communicate with the driver and I try to ask politely how long will it take for a short break but they chase us away. If you ask how comfortable the bus is ? I must say not comfortable at all. I understand not a VIP bus.

The ride was ok, but as the ticket was called "VIP" we expected a cleaner bed and newer wagon - but it was the old train they are were having for 60 years ;). But all in all it was a good ride - we would do it again.

Is Hanoi a car-friendly city?

Navigating Hanoi by car can be challenging due to heavy traffic, narrow streets, and limited parking. Traffic congestion is common, especially during peak hours. Many locals prefer using scooters or public transportation, such as buses or the newly developed metro system, which is expanding.

Taxis and ride-hailing services like Grab are widely available and affordable, with fares typically around 15,000 VND per kilometer ($0.60). For those who choose to drive, renting a car with a driver is recommended to avoid the complexities of the local traffic system. Parking can be difficult to find and may be expensive in central areas. If you do drive, be aware that traffic rules are not always strictly followed, requiring extra caution.

How do you dress in Hanoi?

Dress modestly and comfortably, considering both the weather and cultural norms. Hanoi experiences a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers and cooler winters. Light, breathable clothing is advisable in summer, while a jacket or sweater is needed during winter months (December to February). When visiting temples or pagodas, cover shoulders and knees out of respect. Casual attire is suitable for most places, but upscale restaurants and events may require more formal clothing. Rain can be frequent, especially from May to September, so pack a raincoat or umbrella. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended for exploring the city.

Are taxis easy in Hanoi?

Taxis are widely available and convenient in Hanoi. Major taxi companies such as Mai Linh and Vinasun are recommended for their reliability. Fares typically start at around 10,000 VND ($0.40) for the first kilometer, with additional kilometers costing approximately 13,000 VND ($0.55). Ensure the meter is used to avoid overcharging.

Ride-hailing apps like Grab are also popular and can offer more predictable pricing. Traffic can be dense, especially during peak hours, so plan extra travel time. Cash is commonly used, though some taxi services accept credit cards.
